Things I wish I knew when I got to college
These are not my own opinions, I read some of these on Weibo. University time is starting soon, many freshmen are coming first step to college, I think this would be relevant and help any lost soul out there. Here are the things I wish I knew before I got to college:
1. Accept the fact that you would lose your high school friends and you might have no friend in college - It is not a shame if you eat alone in the canteen, or sitting alone at school. It is not like studying is everybody's priority when they got to college but you should know it is your priority and you do not have to follow others to parties if you do not feel like. Wasting your study time in college in parties is going to show the result right away. Keep yourself focus and your will find people with the same priority on the way. Not right away, but you will.
2. Focus on your own business, no need to join any drama. It is not fun afterward.
3. Do not tell your peers about your plan. The chance that they support you is small. If you cannot achieve it, it will be a joke.
4. Your roommate might be your best friend for life. Communicate straight to the face if there is something in the way they live bother you. Do not gossip or talk behind their back. Share the cost equally.
5. You can work part-time but choose the work wisely. I have been a cleaner for some time. It helped me greatly financially but not academically. Choose the job that would support your future career, even if it does not pay well yet. Your have a long road ahead, choose the horse that can bring you far, not fast.
6. Life is unfair, you will see that clearer when you get to college. Accept that fact.
7. You can drink, you can be in love but do not go too far.
8. Study in college is not going to be easier than high school, especially parents and teachers are not going to babysit you. Be disciplined.
9. Student organizations - sounds cool, broaden your network but there is no big deal about it. If you don't join it, it does not matter.
10. Learn to control your financial situation. If you have your parents support you, it is a bless but it is not your money, be responsible with it. If you use the student loan, it is fine too, but it will hit back later so use the money wisely. Learn to invest to mutual fund or some save stock or even some good courses. Wasting money on liabilities like branded fashion, nice car, fancy restaurant, ... it is good for that moment, but will it feel good in the long run?
11. Find your target and follow it. Love, career, life.
12. Do not procastinate, do things that matter later in life.
13. Call your parents. They miss you.
Wish I knew these when I was younger :)
